Q: I'm getting the error message "Error: -395x". How do I fix it?
A: This varies from computer to computer. The steps needed in
order to remove it
1) Drop to DOS. Under Windows 9x, go to Start | Run and type in "command.com"
2) Change to your VTT directory. This can typically be done by typing "cd\progra~1\carrot\vtt"
3) Type in VTT -fix
Under VTT 1.80, you can run VTT -fix from the Start menu.

Q: I'm getting a mfc42.dll error. What do I do?
Well, here's the answer from DJ Junior (I'd also like to acknowledge the zillions of others who have posted this same thing. I'm not forgetting you, its just that his post was convenient to cut and paste =P )
Uninstall VTT. Now do a search on your PC for the mfc42.dll file to locate the location of the file. It should be in the c:\windows\system folder if you are running Windows 9x. Restart your PC in DOS mode, rename the file to eg. mfc42.old. DO NOT DELETE the file, rename it for backup purposes. Now restart your PC and reinstall VTT.
This is what happens: VTT tries to install a copy of the mfc42.dll file during installation, but if their are currently a version of that file in use on your PC VTT cannot replace the file with the one it tries to install. If the version of the file currently on your PC is not the version VTT requires it gives you the error message in VTT.
Everything should be working fine now. If it still does not work and something else is skrewed up on your PC, restart in dos mode again, delete the mfc42.dll file (this is the one VTT installed) and rename the mfc42.old file back to mfc42.dll.
Restart the PC and all will be back as it was before VTT installation.
Good Luck
DJ Junior
Q: How do I record with VTT?
A: You can't, at least not directly from VTT. There are several methods to record indirectly (all involve setting up a virtual or real LINE IN port)
1) Use a utility such as Virtual Audio Cable or Total Recorder
- Pros: Completely digital, works with single soundcard configurations; Cons: Sometimes difficult to setup, and doesn't work all the time.
- Actual instructions for recording with these utilities are provided in their individual documentations
2) Use two soundcards
- Pros: Easy to setup if you already have two soundcards
- Cons: Not completely digital
- Requirements:
a. Two soundcards, one of which is FULL DUPLEX (i.e. it can record and play at the same time)
b. Miniplug cable (or whatever you need to connect one soundcard to the other)
c. Stereo splitter... This takes a stereo signal and splits it into two STEREO signals
- Steps
-
With the two soundcard configuration, you'll typically have one soundcard
setup to output to the speakers (the OUTPUT soundcard), and the other setup
to cue/monitor (the CUE soundcard)
-
Detach the cable that runs from the line out of your OUTPUT soundcard to
your speaker.
-
Attach the stereo splitter to your OUTPUT soundcard
-
Attach your speaker cable to one of the two plugs that comes out of the
stereo splitter
-
Attach the miniplug cable (b in requirements) to the other plug that comes
out of the stereo splitter
-
Attach the other end of the miniplug cable into the LINE IN on your CUE
soundcard
-
Load up your favorite recording program (Cooledit, Windows recorder, etc)
and set it up to record from the LINE IN of the CUE soundcard.
-
Startup VTT, hit record on your recording program, and mix away!
- Similiar steps can be used to use VTT on one computer, and record with
another
Q: Can I use ShoutCast to broadcast my VTT mixes?
A: Again, you can, but not directly. Pretty much, you follow the above steps, minus the last two where you startup your recording program.
Instead of starting up your recording program, you setup WinAMP/Shoutcast to work with line in information (I'm not sure what the exact name of the plugin is, but I know it exists). Since both methods outlined above eventually create a line in (whether virtual in the case 1, or real in case 2), you should be able to instruct Shoutcast to listen to one of the ports.
If you DO setup a ShoutCast server, please add it to the VTT Contribution area!
Q: VTTs skipping a lot, what can I do?
A: Couple things
-
Get a hardware accelerated soundcard like a Diamond Monster Sound or a
Sound Blaster Live. Using a hardware accelerated soundcard takes
a lot of the burden involved with mixing off the CPU and frees it to do
better things like decode MP3s
-
Get a faster CPU. Typically, any sort of P2 should work fine.
A P166 or greater should be enough to handle VTT. I would shy away
from AMD or CYRIX machines since they tend to have poor floating point
speed (Floating point is very important to MP3 decoding)
-
Setup your headphones to be 8 bit instead of 16. Go to Settings |
Mixer settings | Advanced settings... Select your headphone soundcard
and set it to 8 bit, and possibly even a lower sampling rate
-
Turn off equalizers and any DSP effects you may have installed
-
(VTT 1.80) Try decreasing your block size. Go to Settings | Device
settings... | Playback tab; Set it to a smaller number
-
(VTT 1.80) Set your buffer size to something larger. Go to settings
| Device settings... | Playback tab; Set it to a larger number
Q: Does VTT work with AutoCatalyst?
A: Version 1.80 is guaranteed to work with AutoCatalyst enabled MP3s.
Version 1.75 and below may or may not, depending on whether or not the
patch works for you (check the downloads section)
Q: VTT doesn't seem to recognize the MP3 format!
A: This is typically caused by a) Installing the patch and having it
not compatible with your system or b) Installing VTT 1.75 after uninstalling
VTT 1.8
Steps to correct:
-
Go to your Windows\System directory and delete XAudio.dll
-
Reinstall VTT
Q: How do I install WinAMP Input Plugins for use
with VTT? (Applies to 1.8 only)
A: Copy your IN_*.dll plugins from your WinAMP Plugins directory to
the VTT\Plugins directory of VTT. If VTT already supports that file
format, make sure you turn VTTs .dll off. For instance, if you are
installing WinAMPs MP3 decoder, you need to turn off VTT by simply rename
VTT_IN_MP3Device.dll to VTT_IN_MP3Device.dll.off
